This earthy, organic looking necklace, SHIVA'S TEAR, is made with beautifullly organic Rudraksha seeds, brown freshwater pearls, sterling silver and Thai fine silver. It is a handmade, one of a kind (OOAK) piece created by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs.
Six whorled Rudraksha seeds grace the front of the necklace. What interesting seeds these are with their gorgeous color and interesting, textured surface! Interspersed bewteeen the Rudraksha seeds are dark brown freshwater pearls that have a slight brick red tinge to them. Sterling silver daisy spacers and 2mm sterling silver beads "frame" the Rudraksha seeds. Rich brown freshwater pearls continue around the back of the necklace. SHIVA'S TEAR is finished with a Thai Hill Tribes handmade fine silver hook clasp.
The seeds of the Rudraksha tree, which is a large evergreen, broad-leaved tree that grows in the foothills of the Himalayas and other places, is traditionally used for prayer beads in Hinduism. Used as meditative rosaries for thousands of years by Hindus, Sikhs and Buddists, Rudraksha "malas" help to sanctify the mind, body and soul. The word "Rudraksha" is derived from "Rudra" (Shiva-the Hindu God of all living creatures) and "aksha" (eyes). When Lord Shiva opened his eyes after a long period of yoga, a Hindu legend says, because of the extreme fulfillment he felt, he shed a single tear. This one tear grew into the Rudraksha tree.
