Interesting information about stenciling and stencils ... from Wikipedia
Stencilling produces an image or pattern by applying pigment to a surface over an intermediate object with designed gaps in it which create the pattern or image by only allowing the pigment to reach some parts of the surface. The stencil is both the resulting image or pattern and the intermediate object. Stencils can be reused repeatedly.

Stencil technique in visual art is also referred to as pochoir. Screen printing uses a stencil process, as does mimeography. The masters from which mimeographed pages are printed are called "stencils". Stencils can be made with one or many colour layers using different techniques, with most stencils designed to be applied as solid colours. During screen printing and mimeography, the images for stenciling are broken down into color layers. Multiple layers of stencils are used on the same surface to produce multi-colored images.

Prehistoric hand stencils ...
Hand stencils, made by blowing pigment over a hand held against a wall, are found from over 35,000 years ago in Asia and Europe, and later prehistoric dates in other continents. After that stenciling has been used as a historic painting technique on all kinds of materials. Stencils may have been used to color cloth for a very long time; the technique probably reached its peak of sophistication in Katazome and other techniques used on silks for clothes during the Edo period in Japan. In Europe, from about 1450 they were commonly used to color old master prints printed in black and white, usually woodcuts.

Book illustration ...
Stencils were popular as a method of book illustration, and for that purpose, the technique was at its height of popularity in France during the 1920s when André Marty, Jean Saudé and many other studios in Paris specialized in the technique. When stencils are used in this way they are often called "pochoir". In the pochoir process, a print with the outlines of the design was produced, and a series of stencils were used through which areas of color were applied by hand to the page. To produce detail, a collotype could be produced which the colors were then stenciled over. Pochoir was frequently used to create prints of intense color and is most often associated with Art Nouveau and Art Deco design.

Home stenciling ...
A common tradition for stencils is in home decorating and arts & crafts. There are prefabricated stencil templates available for home decoration projects from hardware stores, arts & crafts stores and through the internet. Stencils are usually applied in the home with a paint or roller brush along wall borders and as trim. They can also be applied with a painted sponge for a textured effect.

Silk screening ...
Silk screening is a type of printing on paper or textiles, in which an ink is embedded in the cloth. The ink is controlled through the use of a stencil, which is placed directly over the paper or textile. This process can only handle one color of ink at a time. Therefore, multi-colored designs must be silk screened several times.

SHIPPING
I require between two and ten business days depending on the season to process and mail out orders. Certain times of the year are busier than others and can present a slight backlog of orders. I do process all orders as they come in with the goal of getting the items to my customers as rapidly as possible.

For US orders I ship using USPS Priority Mail. The postal service generally delivers the order within 2 - 5 days but delivery is NOT Guaranteed by them.

USPS Priority Mail does include basic insurance. If the package is damaged a claim will need to filed with the US Postal Service. I can assist you with that process but in some cases the damaged package and contents may need to be taken to your local post office so they can inspect the package.

SHIPPING COSTS
Domestic shipping cost is $6.95 for Priority Flat Rate up to 13 oz and no more than 9" x 12" dimensions. Domestic shipping cost is $8 for Priority Tube Rate no more than 18" wide and no more than 70 lbs.

Multiple item orders, if the items are purchased at the same time, will always be shipped together. USPS Priority Mail includes up to $100 of insurance coverage. International shipping cost is variable by country, by size and weight of the package. VAT charges are the responsibility of the buyer.

SHIPPING TIMES:
The U.S. Postal Service is usually pretty reliable but does occasionally goof. Most packages arrive swiftly but the post office can sometimes take up to the full ten days for domestic post and up to six weeks for international post. Once your stencils are delivered to the post office, any questions about delivery or other issues should be directed to them using the tracking number provided.

SHIPPING DELAYS: Beyond purchasing the correct label and delivering the package to the shipping provider in a timely manner, we cannot be held responsible for the post office's level of service. If the package takes longer to deliver than it "should" according to the shipping provider's policies that is an issue to address directly with the shipping provider.

LOST, STRAYED, OR DAMAGED PACKAGES
If you do not receive your purchases or if they arrive damaged, you will need to fill out a claim form, stating the problem. It can be done in person at the post office or online and must be completed within 30 days from the date of shipment.

To give yourself the best chance of success when filing a claim with the US Postal Service you will need to provide the following:

1) pictures of the damaged packaging,
2) a picture or copy of the packing slip to prove value,
3) a picture of the shipping label to show the commercial plus insurance, and
4) a picture of the damaged stencil.

I am not responsible for whether or not the claim is approved or denied by the post office.

Please remember that shipping around any holiday can be problematic and is very unpredictable!

Additional policies and FAQs

For custom orders, please include 1) the image or phrase desired, 2) the date you need the item by, 3) dimensions of the finished stencil, and 4) your zip code on a custom stencil request. If I approve the order I will let you know to submit payment. Paying for the stencil does not guarantee that I can make it but you will receive a full refund if I cannot.

Stencils over 9" x 12" may be shipped rolled. Flat envelopes may bend during delivery if not handled carefully by postal workers. If a stencil won't lay flat, roll it the opposite direction and tape it for an hour to flatten it.

If you have any other questions, contact me before you order!

Thank you.
