ArtFire Chatterbox Forums FAQ

Basic Info
Who can post in the ArtFire forums?
Any registered member of ArtFire can post in the forums; this includes Pro Sellers, Basic Sellers, and Buyers. To register for an ArtFire account, please visit our registration page to get started.

How do I upload an avatar for the forums?
Your forum  avatar is the same as the avatar for your studio or profile. You can upload or change your avatar by going to your My ArtFire, clicking on the Edit my Studio link, and choosing the Studio Avatar option.

How do I create a new topic in the forums?
To create a new topic you can either click the Post New button at the top of your desired category, or you can click the Start a New Topic link in the left forum navigation panel and choose a category from the drop down menu near the bottom.

How do I reply in a thread?
To reply to a thread you can use the quick or advanced reply functions found at the bottom of every thread page. You can also click the Reply link on any post in a thread and you will immediately be taken to the advanced reply screen where you can write and submit your reply.

Why are there Items on the right side of the forums?
Items appear on the right side of the forums to feature items from ArtFire Pro sellers.

Who decides which items to feature on the right hand side of the forums?
If you are viewing a thread, then any Pro member who has posted in the thread has a chance to have items featured so long as they have a positive reputation. This encourages interaction in the forums and rewards users who help others by giving them extra exposure. When you are viewing other parts of the forums in which no Pro members are active, the items are pulled randomly from
ArtFire Pro sellers.

How do I share a link to a website?
You can share a link with other users by using the WYSIWYG editor. You can get to the WYSIWYG editor when you begin to post a new thread or you  choose to use the Advanced Reply feature when replying to a thread. To share a link, you need to highlight the text you want to link and click the create hyperlink button on the editor. You can see a full run down of each option in the WYSIWYG editor here.

How do I post a picture?
You can post a picture using the WYSIWYG editor. Check out our guide on how to post pictures and make them clickable.

How does the Quote button work?
The quote button on each post in a thread allows you to quote that user to reference what they said in your reply. When you quote another user you are not able to change or alter what that user said.

Why don’t all my Artifacts show up in the forums?
The Artifacts that appear in the forums are those that are relevant to other forum  readers. Currently the two Artifacts that will appear are the Maven Artifact and the Fire Mentor Artifact. ArtFire Mavens  usually get a sneak peek at new features and get to see a bit more of what goes on behind the scenes during development. As such, they are usually very active members of the community who often have tips and insights to share. Fire Mentors have proven themselves to be consistent sources for helping community members learn the different features and tools of ArtFire. Users will know to turn members with these Artifacts when looking for help in the forums.

Community Moderation and Reputation

What is the red-green bar next to users’ avatars?
The red-green bar is part of the Community Moderation System and is a rough visualization of a user’s community reputation. A user’s reputation is voted on by the community. Users can vote on others reputations by clicking the red (negative) circle or green (positive) circle.

What is the Community Moderation System?
The Community Moderation System is a way for the community as a whole to moderate and vote on what type of content is encouraged or discouraged within the community. The community can set its own standards how it sees fit. Read more about Community Moderation here.

Who can vote in the Community Moderation System?
Most users who interact in the forums will be able to vote in the community moderation system. Users who have a negative community  reputation are not able to vote on other users until their reputation improves. Read more about Community Moderation here.

What happens if I block a user?
Blocking a user hides their posts from you. This does not affect what anyone else will see, it only affect what you see. After blocking a user, any posts or replies from that user will appear as “post blocked,” you will have the option to unblock individual posts from the user without removing the block entirely. You can remove users from your blocked list in your My Settings link on your left navigation panel.

What is the Vote to Move function and how does it work?
Vote to Move is an option on the original post in a thread only. If you feel that a post is better suited for another category of the site, you have the option to vote to move that thread to a different category. If enough members vote to move the thread, it will be moved to the selected category.

Left Navigation Panel

What can I change in My Settings?
In the My Settings link on your left navigation panel, you can remove people from your blocked list, opt to view all posts regardless of reputation scores, and view your past interaction on the forums.

What is the My Posts section?
The My Posts section shows you all the posts you’ve made on the Chatterbox Forums starting with the most recent. The most useful feature of the My Posts section is the ability to “jump to topic” or immediately visit the thread that you made the post in. This allows you to visit your past discussions or mark a thread to read later.

What is the My Topics section?
The My Topics section allows you to view all of the topics you have created. You can opt to turn on/off notifications of replies for each of your topics in this section (read more about this below).

How do I turn off notifications of replies for topics I create?
You can turn off, or on, notifications of replies for topics you’ve created by visiting the My Topics section of the forums. You can get to this section by clicking the My Topics link from the left navigation panel of the site.

Definitions

What’s a “clipboard”?
A clipboard is a computer term related to the copy and paste function found in many applications. When you copy text or an image, it is stored in your clipboard until you paste it. For most practical purposes you can only have one item in your clipboard at a time.

What does WYSIWYG mean?
WYSIWYG is an anagram for “What You See Is What You Get.” A WYSIWYG editor allows you to format your posts and replies in the forum without having to use code or other types of markup.

What is a sticky thread?
A sticky thread can be created by a staff member to “stick” the thread at the top of a forum category. Typically a sticky thread is used for important announcements or to convey guidelines that need to be seen by all users.

Why Can't I...?

Why can’t I embed YouTube videos, some widgets, or other code?
To keep the site as secure as possible, the forum system automatically strips certain parts of code that is needed for many of the embedded videos and widgets you find on the web.

Why can’t I start a new topic in the Staff Announcements category?
The Staff Announcements category is intended for staff topics only; this is to aid communication between the administration of ArtFire and the community. While you can’t start a new topic here, you can reply to any of the topics created in the staff announcements category.

Why can't I block staff members post or vote on staff reputations?
Staff members do not have forum reputation and cannot be "blocked" to ensure communication with the community. Staff members often post announcements or suggestions that need to be able to be seen by anyone in the community.

Why can't I make a new thread?
If your community reputation has reached the community moderation level you will be unable to make new threads to avoid the confusion it may cause members who will not be able to read your post. You are still free to reply to posts and you can create topics in the Bug Reports category, however, only staff members and users who've opted to see posts below the moderation level will be able to see your topic. Overtime all reputation votes "diminish" in value and your reputation will drift back to neutral; neutral forum reputation will allow you to make new topics and interact as usual.
